Our Vision
Unfortunately Commercial horticulture is not as green as we would all like to think. As with many industries high energy use, packaging, transport, chemical and water use are all prominent factors and this got us thinking. When you strip the growing of plants back to basics non of these factors are significant, the problems really start when you try to control too many of the conditions that are favourable to a plants growth.
This thinking was formative in developing the underlying ethos behind Provenance Plants, that of 'protecting the environment'. And it is with this in mind that we set about growing our plants differently.
To date some of the measures we have taken are:
- Energy use
We have turned our oil fired heaters down and in some cases off. This means that we burn significantly less oil, the down side to this is that our plants take longer to grow, but they are fully hardy as a result.
- Water recycling
We have installed an irrigation system that captures used water and recycles it.
- Pesticide use
Remarkably by turning the heat down in the winter the need for spraying with pesticides is reduced. Most of the nasty insects and funguses do their worst when you combine artificial heat and poor ventilation. Better plant spacing and mixing has also enabled us to reduce general pesticide use.
- Compost
Many of our shrubs, perennials and trees are now grown in peat reduced compost.
To further develop our growing facilities whilst addressing our long term aim of protecting the environment, we have designed an environmental strategy.
