About Us
Founded in 2003 by the Myatt family, Provenance Plants was established as a sustainable, low energy alternative to modern garden centres and nurseries. We have long held the view that modern production of plants is unsustainable, so after 25 years experience running a busy plant centre we decided that the time was right for change.
Many of us are concerned about how our food is produced or where it comes from. The huge success of the organic movement is a testament to this, with many people now taking the next logical step and trying to buy produce that is locally grown.
We feel that there are many obvious parallels between plant and food production. Much of what we purchase from our local garden centres is intensively grown with little regard for energy cost or pesticide use not withstanding the fact that the majority is unnecessarily imported. These sort of practices undermine fundamental elements of sustainable production, such as to produce goods where there is greatest demand and not necessarily where it is most economically viable
Resolving these issues has really become the cornerstone of our values, which influence all aspects of our business practices.
Singularly the most unusual fact about Provenance plants is that we produce all our own plants. Ethically we feel this is the most effective way we can demonstrate our plants provenance and therefore wherever possible we grow our plants from seed, cuttings and by division.
Coupled with our environmental strategy we aim to grow our plants to the highest standards for now and for the future.
